Review
by Michael Lee, Austin Texas
As an insurance
agent specializing in employee benefits for over a dozen years, I
have observed premium rates reach levels that over 40% of the nation’s
employers feel they can no longer offer group health plans to their
employees. Each week I read a host of articles proclaiming our dilemma
is caused by a particular cause. I have long sensed that no single
reason or condition was the complete reason for our insurance crisis.
Mr.
Shupe’s book, The Bitter Pill, clearly addresses a myriad
of causes and cost drivers creating our current situation. Mr. Shupe
takes the reader on an illuminating journey of how group insurance
began and how we arrived at the state we are in today. By identifying
all of the underlying reasons for our crisis, the reader gains a
complete understanding of the complexity of the problem. Mr. Shupe
provides viable solutions that could return America’s employers
to providing the delivery system of health insurance as it once was.
As
an agent, this book is a must read. Mr. Shupe’s experience
and insight into health insurance enables any agent to intelligently
answer consumer’s questions regarding ever increasing premiums.
As an employer, consumer, provider or politician, “The Bitter
Pill” can assist anyone to identify their part of the problem
and solutions they should strive for.
